Oleophobic lenses like HOYA’s SUPER HiVision EX3 ward off fingerprints, smudges, and oils.
Since there are so many anti-reflective (AR) lenses on the market, some eyecare professionals have begun to call the most recent sophisticated products premium AR lenses because they incorporate the latest and most advanced elements. Here’s what you should know about them before you recommend an AR lens treatment.
RAISING THE BAR What sets premium AR lenses apart from other AR lenses is the features they incorporate. While standard AR lenses are efficient surface-reflection fighters, premium AR lenses have hydrophobic, oleophobic, and anti-static properties so they repel moisture, oils, and minute airborne particles.
STAYING CLEAN Hydrophobic treatments have been applied to high-end AR lenses for many years. While these treatments are helpful, the latest crop of AR lenses have what the industry has coined a “super-hydrophobic” treatment. The difference between this and a standard hydrophobic treatment is that the super-hydrophobic treatments have a higher surface tension. This means that they repel liquids better.
If you’re a potential lens buyer, this is important news because it means your new lenses will stay cleaner longer. Lenses with Essilor of America, Inc.’s Crizal Avancé™ with Scotchgard™ Protector and Carl Zeiss Vision Inc.’s Pure-Coat™ by ZEISS have super-hydrophobic properties.
THE PREMIUM POWER Today’s new cutting-edge anti-reflective lenses are super durable and allow over 99% of light to transmit through the lens, which increases contrast and provides the most detailed image for the wearer. This kind of performance is exactly what eyewear patients have been clamoring for. Through the use of sophisticated technology, lens manufacturers and coaters are now able to produce these products reliably and with the kind of quality we can all be proud to recommend.
Premium AR lenses also have oleophobic properties, so they repel fingerprints, smudges, and oils. These pesky problems come up so easily that it’s often difficult to know how they surface—but they do occur frequently and often interfere with vision. The best strategy for managing them is to have a lens that avoids them…and that’s where premium AR lenses with oleophobic properties come in. Lenses like HOYA VISION CARE, North America’s SUPER HiVision™ EX3 and Seiko Optical Products of America, Inc.’s Super SV with Superclean AR can do this.
NO STATIC AROUND HERE An anti-static property is an important feature for an AR lens. This helps the lens deter lint, dust, and other airborne debris. Lens wearers know all too well how easily these particles can be attracted to a lens, especially when using a microfiber cleaning cloth to clean the lens. Lenses with Opticote, Inc.’s tzAvoRite, Signet Armorlite, Inc.’s KODAK Clean‘N’CleAR™, and Satisloh’s Ioncote K+ feature such anti-static properties.
From the opticianry side of the dispensing table, it is always in your best interest to offer the most advanced AR lenses available to your patients. Remember that in many cases your reputation is worn on their faces, and you’re only as good as the last pair of glasses you sold them.
